A Clear Future for Internet

It’s actually finally happening. Sprint and Clearwire are creating a new wireless company that will focus on WiMAX technologies. This comes after Sprint shareholders freaked over the company going after WiMAX to the point of firing the CEO. And the new company name?  Drumroll please……………………….

Clearwire

I think they’d be better off dumping the Clearwire brand baggage. I guess they convinced Sprint otherwise, or else they decided the Sprint brand baggage was worse.  Sprint will hold 51% of the stock and have the majority of appointed board members.  Other major investors, to the tune of 3.2 billion dollars, are Google, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and Bright House Networks.

WiMAX has a lot of potential, especially allowing connections for up to 10 miles.  The ability to move around town and keep a high-speed Internet connection is very appealing.  It can also be a viable back-up Internet plan for businesses when their wires go down.

We have Clearwire where I live, but I’m at the fringes of three towers. There’s not enough signal from any of them to pick it up.  If the signal is better and contract terms are better with WiMAX, I’ll be giving it try.
